Hog plums are widely used in making pickles and as a replacement for tamarind in curries. But we Konkanis prepare so many variety dishes from the hog plums. The combination of hog plums and tender bamboo shoots make an amazing combo pickle called as “ keerlu- ambade nonche “. The use of hog plums in bitter gourd ghashi, which we fondly call as ” Karathe ambade ghashi ” is loved by most.
As you know there are two varieties of hog plums, one the sour ones and the other is sweet hog plums which we call as Godd ambado. The sweet taste of the ripened hog plums is well used in several Konkani dishes like “sukke” and “humman “.
Today am introducing one of the most tasty dishes of the sweet hog plums, Godd ambade Humman. A sweet and spicy curry with the natural tanginess of the sweet hog plums is served as a side dish with rice. Here goes the recipe

Ingredients :-

  • Sweet hog plums – 8 to 10
  • Jaggery – 1/2 cup
  • Red chillies – 5 to 8
  • Urad – 1 tsp
  • Mustard -1 tsp
  • Methi seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Rava – one and a half tsp
  • Salt – as required.

Method :-

  1. Scrape the black marks over the ripened sweet hog plums. Take care not to remove the skin.
  2. Now wash them and crush them to half by hitting with some heavy substance over it.
  3. Later pressure cook the sweet hog plums adding 1 cup water, jaggery and salt for one or two continuous whistles.
  4. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and boil it.
  5. Now sprinkle rava to this boiling humman. Rava will get cooked in few minutes. This will help to thicken the gravy.
  6. Now remove the curry from the flame.
  7. Prepare the tadka by heating oil. Fry mustard, urad, methi and red chillies.
  8. Pour the tadka over the curry once it’s done.
  9. The heavenly Godd ambade humman is ready to be served.
