Gabbya Polthein ( Banana Stem Salad)
Gabbo(Banana Stem) is widely used by GSB’s to make various delicacies like Sukke, polthein, sassam and upkari. It is high in fibre and considered to be effective for weight loss.
  1. Gabbo (banana stem) finely chopped – 1 long piece
  2. Green chillies chopped – 2 or 3 nos
  3. Whisked Curd – 1 cup
  4. Hing/Asafoetida – 1 pinch


  1. Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  2. Jeera -1/4 tsp
  3. Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  4. Coriander leaves – 1 tsp for garnish
Gabbya Polthein
  • Finely chop gabbo. Apply salt and keep for an hour.1B0A42CE-63E4-43B2-8924-628C0C6230BF
  • After an hour, squeeze out all the water.
  • To this gabbo add chopped green chillies, hing and curd.Mix well.
  • Check for salt.
  • Season it with mustard seeds, jeera and curry leaves.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve Cold.
              Method to cut Gabbo – hold the gabbo vertically and cut thin discs. As you cut the discs, rotate your fingers, remove and discard all the threads that are formed.
